IDAHO CITY HIGH SCHOOL/MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES POLICY

 

I. Statement of Purpose:

Idaho City High School wishes to set the standard by which other schools measure the participation and sportsmanship of their students. Behavior by any I.C. student that diminishes or lessens that standard will not be tolerated.

II. Philosophy of Activity:

Participation in extra-curricular activities is a privilege and not a right. Participation in these activities is an integral part of the secondary school educational program. The privilege to participate shall be conditional upon compliance with the Activities Policy.

III. Activities Policy:

A. Programs involved:

1. Cheerleading, Football, Volleyball, Cross Country, Basketball, Track
2. Drama, Choir, Band, Student Council

B. Academic Eligibility Requirements and Consequences:

  1. Students must have passed six classes the prior semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 in order to begin participation in the activity.
  2. Students will be required to maintain passing grades in all classes.
  3. Students will take grade check sheets to all of their teachers on Monday throughout the season.
  4. A three week “stair step” procedure will be in effect during the season.
    • 1st Week: If a student has a failing grade, he/she will be placed on Probation for that week. He/she will still be eligible to participate. Parents should be notified.
    • 2nd Week: If a student has not pulled his/her grades up to passing, he/she will be declared Ineligible for competition during that week. He/she will still be able to practice with parental consent.
    • 3rd Week: If a student has not pulled his/her grades up to passing, he/she will be Removed from the team for the remainder of the season.
    5. Coaches and advisors are encouraged to require students to attend a study hall whenever a student experiences academic difficulties.

C. Attendance:

    1. A student must attend school all day (7 periods) in order to participate in practices or competitions.
    2. Exceptions will be made for appointments with a doctor/dentist or late arrival time from the previous night’s competition (See: Extra Curricular Excused Time Policy).
    3. A student who is suspended from school may not participate during the time of suspension.

D. General Eligibility:

Minor Offenses:

1. acts of unsportsmanlike conduct that result in, but are not limited to, team penalties or technical fouls

2. behavioral referrals

1st Offense: Meeting with the coach/advisor, principal, activities director, student and parents.

2nd Offense: Suspension from all extra curricular activities for two weeks. If the student is not currently involved in a school activity, the suspension will carry over into the next activity the student plans to participate in.

3rd Offense: The student will not be allowed to participate. He/she will not receive or be nominated for any recognition or awards. This may include a varsity letter.

Major Offenses:

1. use or possession of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs other than by prescription **During the entire activity season, from the first practice to the last game, players may not use or possess alcohol, illegal drugs, or tobacco in any form, including smokeless tobacco. A student may be considered to be in possession of alcohol/drugs if they are with another student who has the prohibited items, such as at a party or in a car.

2. theft or vandalism

1st Offense: The student will be suspended for the remainder of the season or for a time period no less than 30 participation days. Suspension may carry over into the next season.

2nd Offense: The student will be suspended for the remainder of the season or for a time period no less than 60 participation days. Suspension may carry over into the next season.

3rd Offense: The student will be suspended from all extra curricular activities for one calendar year.

IV. Statement of Expectations for Parents and Fans:

Support for our children, students and school will always be encouraged. Conduct that is abusive towards officials, participants or other schools will not be tolerated. Such abuses need to be addressed so they do not bring shame or embarrassment to our school. Spectators who are behaving unacceptably will be asked to stop the offensive behavior or be asked to leave the building or field of play.
